Dead Cell Removal

ClioCell Nanoparticles are designed to deplete non-viable (dead or dying) cells from eukaryotic cell cultures. ClioCell Nanoparticles selectively bind and remove non-viable cells via ligands exposed on dead and dying cells, in a range of different media and temperatures conditions – the resulting cell preparation remaining after ClioCell treatment is a highly viable population of cells, unhindered by the deleterious signalling effects caused by neighbouring apoptotic and necrotic cells (slow cell growth, loss of reproducibility, decreased purity, less yield).

Removing dead and dying cells from cell culture preparations has a number of beneficial effects for many protocols, including:
  • Antibody Production: Monoclonal antibody production in ClioCell-treated cultures is almost double that of control cultures (mAbs 1:4, 370-376; July/August 2009; Landes Bioscience]
  • Embryonic Stem Cells: Growth curves significantly improved after ClioCell treatment (9x106 cells vs. 6x106 cells after 7 days of culture)
  • Drug Screening: Chemotaxis assay sensitivity increased 170% after ClioCell treatment
  • Cell Revival: Re-establishment of cell populations after cryopreservation is vastly increased after ClioCell treatment to remove cells damaged from freezing – when BL2 cells are frozen for 24 h, then cultured for 5 h in BL2 medium, 90% of cells in the population treated with ClioCell are viable (as determined by FACS analysis), compared to 30% in the non-treated population. The reduction of dead cells speeds proliferation, and is a useful tool for optimising cell growth in manufacturing conditions.
